Before You Purchase an Industrial RO System: Preventative Maintenance

So far in this blog series, we have covered tips, tricks, and advice regarding your Industrial Reverse Osmosis system. We’ve provided information on Feed Water Testing, Sizing Your RO System, Pre-Treatment, and Spare Parts & Consumables. In this final blog of the series, we will cover the ever-so-important process of Preventative Maintenance.

The Importance of Preventative Maintenance

Preventative Maintenance is the process of completing regular tasks on your RO system to improve its functionality and longevity. Often overlooked and neglected, preventative maintenance is perhaps the most important thing you can do to ensure your system does not need (costly!) repairs. Although the specifics and frequency of what you can do for your RO system vary between models, there are some general guidelines that we have found to be most important. We recommend completing different types of maintenance on varying schedules. Some tasks are better done daily, while others only need to be done once a year.

Preventative Maintenance General Guidelines

Here are some general guidelines to work off when creating a preventative maintenance plan:

Daily: To keep your RO systems running as long as possible, there are a few tasks you can do daily. First and foremost, check your system for any unusual noises or new leaks. These are great indicators of a deeper problem. We also recommend checking your water and chemical levels, as well as your pressures and flows. Doing these brief daily tasks will greatly help the overall health of your system.

Monthly: At a minimum, your pre-filter should be changed once a month, although sometimes it may need to be changed sooner. By filtering out dirt and large particles, your pre-filter is vital to the functionality of your RO system.

Quarterly: As a part of your quarterly preventative maintenance plan, you should be sure to check the safety pressure switches. Additionally, you may want to begin thinking about a potential RO membrane cleaning, as well as a potential pump/ motor grease or oil. While these are not an absolute necessity to complete each quarter, it is prudent to ensure that these are in good working order and that maintenance is not necessary.

Annually: The annual preventative maintenance schedule is perhaps the most important and most intense check we recommend completing. In this check, you should calibrate your probes, sensors, and pressure transmitters, as well as check your safety pressure switches. You should also check to see if your RO membrane needs cleaning (or replacing every 3-5 years), if your pump needs grease or oil, and if your solenoid valve needs replacing. We also recommend rebuilding your chemical pumps and inspecting your inlet valve.
