Activated carbon for use as an active ingredient (Activated Charcoal, Carbo Activatus) is also supplied by NORIT. Our API grades are used to treat:
- Poisonings
- Drug overdoses
- Diarrhea
- Bloating
Our APIs are compliant with the European Pharmacopoeia and/or US Pharmacopeia, and are produced to the highest purity standards. Our production is pharma GMP certified and offers full auditability.

NORIT SX SUPER S powdered activated carbon(Activated Carbon; E 153 (allowed food additive); Vegetable Carbon) is made from a 100% sustainable plant-based
feedstock and is very high purity, making it ideally suited for use in a range of consumer products due to its gently abrasive, adsorptive and opacifying properties.
The grade is ideally suited for consumer applications, including:
- Toothpaste (whitening)
- Face and body scrubs (exfoliating)
- Soaps and shampoos (adsorptive).
Steam activated carbon is used in cosmetics applications due to its abrasive, adsorptive and opacifying properties, the INCI name charcoal powder must be applied. This grade of charcoal powder shows excellent adsorptive properties and is designed to meet the stringent purity specifications for cosmetics applications.
Application as E 153 Colorant:
Unlike other charcoal powders, NORIT SX SUPER S powdered activated carbon meets all of the stringent purity requirements of E 153 Vegetable Carbon. It can also be used as a black colorant in foods and cosmetics in Europe and most countries in Asia Pacific. As an E153 colorant, it is designed to impart a dark black color in food, food ingredients, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. NORIT SX SUPER S powdered activated carbon meets the requirements for E 153 of the “E.C. Regulations, Commission
Directive 231/2012.”
